My Last Breath ~ Evanescence: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTYuD2…

Zim lay in the puddle, steam rising from him and raining pouring down around him. It burned and he longed to scream, but pain had silenced him long ago. Beside him lay Yin, her eyes closed and her breathing rapid. Burn marks covered her skin and it was obvious to him that she was in even more pain.

How they'd gotten there, he barely remembered through the white-hot pain. His memories played back, blurry. Running to get home before the storm broke out. Seeing her trip, trying to catch her but failing. The rain starting to pour down, paralysing her with the pain. His skin starting to hurt, starting to burn. Trying to get out of the rain but slipping on the sidewalk. Falling beside her, grabbing her hand to hold it tight.

Now they lay, side by side, slowly dying, each silently saying goodbye to life. He longed to live longer, to tell her how he felt and live each day with her. All he wanted was to make her happy. Instead he'd succeeded in dying with her.

With the last of his energy, he turned and used his free hand to turn her face towards him. Her eyes flickered open and met with his. Her contacts had fallen out and those beautiful blue orbs watched him, pain shining deep in the depths of both. He gave a weak smile, trying to gather up words but failing. Instead he reached forward and kissed her on the lips. He could tell she was surprised, but she stayed still, possibly due to the pain, then kissed back.

They pulled apart and he stared at her with affection. Softly he begun murmuring.
"If this is my last breath, I'm glad I'm taking it beside you."
She nodded and gave him another kiss, then rested her head back and lay unnaturally still.

It was around an hour until a boy with black scythe-like hair pulled them from the puddle. Zim groggily opened his eyes and the boy placed him underneath a tree where it was dry. He looked at Yin and looked at her eyes. Glazed and lifeless. Closing his own eyes for a moment, he placed her under the tree beside Zim and stood away from them.

Zim stared at her body for a moment, then realisation flashed in his eyes. His mouth opened and at first nothing came out. When something did, it was not words, but not gibberish either. Instead, a simple scream. A scream so full of pain and sorrow that it could've broken a heart in two. For that was its cause - a broken heart. Not broken so that it could be fixed, either, but instead in a way that it may never heal.

That was the day Yin died. It was a day that the Irkens now remember with aching hearts, and they think of her once every year, on the day she died. For Zim, she is constantly in his mind, the scene being replayed for all eternity. For so long he wished for her to come back to him, for that day to have never happened. But wishing does not always help, and he soon learnt that she would never return to him. He slowly accepted it, though never fully.

He grew to become friends with the boy that had rescued him that fateful day. They had been enemies, at eachother's throats, for years. But the death of Yin brought them together in grieving, and they stayed that way from then on. Yin would forever be in each of their hearts, until the day of their own passing.
